A Cable Shrug is a simple yet effective exercise that targets the trapezius muscles, which are responsible for elevating and stabilizing the shoulders. It is a great exercise to develop and strengthen the upper trapezius muscles, providing better shoulder stability and improved posture. As with any exercise, it's important to use proper form, control the movement, and avoid using momentum. Adjust the weight as needed to ensure you can complete the exercise smoothly and safely. Incorporate the Cable Shrug into your shoulder or upper body workout routine to target the trapezius effectively.
First, place both cable pulleys as low as you can, position yourself perpendicular to the pulley. Then, grab the handle in the closest hand with your arm straight and by your side.
This is the starting position.
From here, elevate your shoulder up to your ear whilst keeping your arm straight thoughout. After this, slowly return the arm to the starting position. This is one repetition, now repeat this for the desired amount. Once you’ve done all the reps on one arm, if required in the program and you are able to do so, repeat the exercise and the repetitions with the other arm.
If you have limited gripping ability try using the Active Hands Gripping aids or D-Ring Aids clipped straight into the carabiner to make this exercise as safe as possible.
