Barbell Shrug

Overview

The barbell shrug is a simple yet effective exercise that primarily targets the trapezius muscles, commonly referred to as the traps. It is a popular strength training exercise often used to build and develop the upper back and neck muscles.

Description

Let's get started by grabbing the barbell and resting it in your elbow with the arms bent.

This is the starting position.

From here, we are going to shrug the shoulders up to your ears then back down again under control. This is one repetition, now repeat for the desired amount.

Benefits

  • Trapezius Strength: Barbell shrugs effectively target and strengthen the trapezius muscles, improving upper back and neck strength.
  • Postural Support: Strong trapezius muscles contribute to better posture by supporting the head, neck, and shoulders.
  • Enhanced Shoulder Stability: Barbell shrugs engage muscles around the shoulders and upper back, promoting greater shoulder stability during various exercises and daily activities.
